O'Hare Expansion Almost A Done Deal
One of the last hurdles comes from the dead. A 157 year old cemetery with 1,600 graves is in the way. Last year officials from the FAA and the City of Chicago rejected a proposal that would leave the cemetery untouched.
Along with the cemetery, they want to demolish hundreds of homes. Two of the neighboring villages, Bensenville and Elk Grove are also involved in litigation over this.
(Chi Trib)The villages are asking the court to prohibit the demolition of more than 600 homes, businesses and parks in the two municipalities because of what they consider a strong likelihood that O'Hare expansion may not be fully carried out.
The villages point to a lack of financial commitment to the full project by the airline industry, as well as insufficient city bonding and federal funding to complete the $15 billion project.
